The District Elders' New Year Festival "Detu Puravisa" Bakmaha Festival, jointly organized by the Kegalle District Elders' Federation and the District Secretariat, was held on 30th April at the Kegalle Pradeshiya Sabha Grounds.
This year's New Year celebration, which prioritized the New Year tradition, began with the hoisting of the national flag amidst the sound of the tambourine. Afterwards, coconut oil lamps were lit, a fire was lit for the amulet, and milk was poured out amidst the blessings of the residents of Detupura. In addition to work, transactions, eating food, and the rituals of applying oil to the head, the Onchili Varam was an element that attracted everyone's attention during this year's Bakmaha Festival.
The festival was also held with the participation of a large number of people, including various costume contests and competitions for the selection of the Elder Prince and Princess and numerous dance performances.
The Department of Social Services of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council and the District Elders' Council jointly organized this year's Avurudu festival with the support of the District Elders' Council, including the District Elders' Promotion Officer, Mrs. Dilani Kumari.
Additional District Secretary (Administration) Mrs.Kusum Bandara, Kegalle Divisional Secretary Mrs.Priyangani Pethangoda, the Social Services Officer of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Headquarters, the Site Officer of the Kegalle Cultural Center, as well as the Elders' Promotion Officers and Development Officers of the District and Divisional Secretariats, officers of the District Secretariat and members of the Elders' Councils were present on this occasion.
