This year’s National Day celebration, in conjunction with the International Environment Day scheduled for June 05, will be celebrated at the Kegalle Nidahas Mawatha under the patronage of the Honorable President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and a review of the current progress of the preparations was held at the District Secretariat Auditorium on 29th May.
An Environment Week will be held from May 30 to June 05 in conjunction with this year’s Environment Day. Accordingly, May 30 will be dedicated to plastic waste management, and a plastic waste collection program will be held in partnership with 30 government institutions in the district, and a free vehicle emission testing and awareness program will be held on May 31 at the Nidahas Mawatha.
June 01 has been designated as Environmental Cleanliness Awareness Day and June 02 as Biodiversity Conservation Day. The area where the Bandula Pethiya fish, which lives only in the Warakapola and Galapitamada areas of the world, is declared a wildlife sanctuary and an environmental exhibition presented by all institutions affiliated with the Ministry of Environment will be inaugurated at the Kegalle Municipal Council Hall on that day. On June 03, selected government officials will be informed about biodiversity. June 04 is the coastal zone cleaning day. On June 05, the last day of the Environment Week, tree plantation and World Environment Day celebrations are scheduled to be held under the patronage of the Honorable President.
The current progress regarding the preparations for these programs was reviewed today with the participation of the heads of the respective institutions.
Kegalle District Parliamentarian Sagarika Athauda, District Secretary Mr.Jagath Herath, Additional District Secretary (Lands) Mr.Dilip Nishantha, Additional Secretaries of the Ministry of Environment, Warakapola and Kegalle Divisional Secretaries, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, officers of the Presidential Security Division, officers of institutions involved in this program and a group of others participated in this event.
