Awareness Program for Census Commissioners and Deputy / Assistant Census Commissioners
A program on economic census to be conducted by the Census and Statistics Department and the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development was held on 06/24/2025 by Kegalle District Secretary M. H. J. M. Herat, Additional District Secretary Dilip Nishantha (Land), Additional District Secretary A. T. Kusum Bandara (Management), Assistant District Secretary Malsha L. Presided over by Mr. Priyadarshini in the auditorium of the District Secretariat.
After the population and housing census in 2024, the economic census is expected to be conducted next. Among the censuses conducted every 10 years, the next focus is on economic development. The government is preparing to conduct an economic census with the announcement by the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Hon'ble Anura Kumara Dissanayake that an economic census should be conducted in the years 2025 and 2026 covering the sectors of agriculture, industry, trade and services.
The census will identify what structural changes have taken place in the economy in the year 2025. Here a survey of agricultural and non-agricultural activities is defined as economic development. Thus, the year 2025 has been introduced as the year of census of agricultural activities. In the year 2026, it is expected to gather information on non-agricultural economic activities, industries and trade services. The combination of these two factors is called the 2025 / 2026 economic development.
The purpose of this is to conduct a census on the agricultural structure covering the entire island at the level of Grama Seva Domain, the smallest local unit in each district, and the statistical operation of collecting, processing and distributing agricultural information at the level of the village officer. In other words, it collects agricultural information along with household units, institutions and farmer groups on a crop year basis.
In yesterday's program, the Census Commissioner of this census will be appointed by the District Secretary and after his comments and welcome speech, the District Statistics Division Head, Deputy Director, Mr. Janaka Rajapaksa explained the purpose of the program on "Organizational Structure of Agriculture Census" and this awareness program was started.
Since carrying out a census is a very responsible and responsible role, the government official mechanism related to it should be properly aligned. The objectives of this are to obtain structural information related to agricultural activities down to the smallest administrative unit, to prepare a benchmark for future agricultural statistics and estimation, and to prepare a sampling frame for agricultural census and survey for the next 10 years.
Census Commissioner, Deputy Director (Map Science Division), Mrs. Pushpa Munasinghe, who was involved as a resource person in this program, briefed the Census Commissioner, Deputy Census Commissioners, Assistant Census Commissioners on the topics "Role of Deputy Assistant Census Commissioners" and "Information Collected from Census".
Divisional Secretary of Divisional Secretariat 11, Chief Accountant, Accountants of Divisional Secretariat Divisions, concerned officers of Agricultural Development Department and Agriculture Department and all officers of District Statistics Division participated in this event.
