An investigation discussion on water issues in Kegalle district was held yesterday (13) at the District Secretariat office under the leadership of Kegalle District Coordination Committee Chairman, Environment Minister Dhammika Patabande Mahathaga.
There are 200802 families in the Divisional Secretariat 11 of Kegalle district and the number of families received water from the drinking water supply and watering board is 61 233. 20625 families getting water from community water projects and 78699 families getting water from other sources. The number of families in Kegalle district who need water further is 40245.
10 water supply methods are currently implemented by the water supply and reservation board to cover all the local secretariat divisions except Daraniyagala Divisional Secretariat. Emagin Kegalle district covers 303 out of 573 village niladari domains which is 37% of the district water requirement.
The National Water Supply and Water Reservation Board continues to extend the existing distribution tanks, Pompagara, Water distribution tank and distribution tank paths as per technical activists and cover higher areas. About 7640 new water contacts are expected through installation.
Community water projects have completed 4 projects in Kegalle district under the five-year plan at a cost of 133 million. Naye Yam disaster situation caused by storm Ditwa has reduced quality due to addition of ron mud in community root projects. 19 out of 45 disaster projects have been able to recover.
There was a wide discussion here about the need of formal water management projects for the coming years as a district and presented suggestions for the route needed in the future.
District Political Authority, District Secretary Mr. Jagat Herath, District Planning Director Mrs. Indika Senaratne, Provincial Secretaries and heads of water supply institutions joined the event for this program organized by the District Planning Department.
