The District Safety Day was celebrated this morning (26) under the patronage of the District Agent/District Secretary Ranjana Jayasinghe at the District Secretariat premises to mark the 20th anniversary of the Tsunami disaster, the worst natural disaster in history.

After hoisting the national flag and singing the national anthem, the national flag was lowered at the behest of the District Agent. A two-minute silence was observed from 9.25 am to 9.27 am in memory of all the countrymen who lost their lives in natural disasters including the Tsunami disaster.

Venerable Asmadale Dhammaratne Thero, the Incumbent of the Sri Mahindodaya Piriveni Parivenadhipathi Tharanagala Buddhist Centre, Deputy Secretary of the Kegalle Shasanarakshaka Bala Mandala, Venerable Ampaya Wimaladharma Thero, Lecturer at the Nittambuwa Sariputta Educational College, Resident Education Officer of the Weweladeniya Temple, Venerable Thotawattage, External Services Officer of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, Venerable Thiagaraja Kurukalthumanda of the Kegalle Kadireshan Kovil, and M.A.M. Aslam Maulu of the Kegalle Nagar Jummamma Mosque were also present at this celebration to perform all religious rituals.

Also, the Venerable Maha Sangha performed a water ceremony in memory of all the countrymen who died in natural disasters, followed by a Pirikara Pooja for all religious leaders.

In conjunction with this event, the District Secretary also presented an emergency response equipment kit to the Kegalle Headquarters Police.

This program was organized by the District Disaster Division and the staff of the District Secretariat participated in the event.
