International Day of the Elderly is celebrated every year on the first of October. In Sri Lanka, the elderly population is increasing day by day and various programs are being implemented for their health and welfare. Accordingly, in conjunction with the upcoming International Day of the Elderly, a series of programs are being implemented in the Kegalle District for the Elderly Week from October 01 to 07. A discussion to inform officials in this regard was held yesterday (13) at the District Secretariat Auditorium.

Accordingly, the District Elders' Day celebration will be held on the first day of October, a program on the theme of Healthy Elders on the second day, programs to empower the elderly community on the third day, a flag sale to promote the Rural Elders' Committee on the fourth day, a program on the theme of Elders with new technology on the fifth day, an awareness campaign on the theme of Elders nourished by Dhamma on the sixth day and awareness programs for the children and youth community in line with the Clean Sri Lanka National Program on the last day are scheduled to be implemented covering every Divisional Secretariat Division.

Furthermore, in conjunction with the Elders' Day, prizes are also scheduled to be awarded to the mother who gave birth to the largest number of children, the best Elders' Council, the best Elders' Rural Committee, the best Elders' Entrepreneur and the best Elders' Day Care Center.

Additional District Secretary (Administration) Kusum Bandara, along with a group of Elder Promotion Officers from Divisional Secretariats and Chairmen of Elders' Councils, participated in the discussion.
